Re-Cluttering: The 2025 Buzzword Nobody Asked For
Jan 05, 2025I’ve seen a lot of wild trends in my time as a professional organiser and declutter coach, but this latest one? It’s something else. The term “re-cluttering” recently popped up on my radar, and I’m genuinely baffled.
Turns out I’m not the only one confused. I asked a few fellow organisers in the industry if they’d heard of this term. Nope. Nada. So, naturally, I had to investigate and asked ChatGPT. What it came back with was pure gold — and hilariously made-up. Let’s break it down!
What is “Re-Cluttering”?
According to ChatGPT:
“Re-cluttering is the intentional process of adding back or reorganising items in a space after it has been decluttered.”
Right. So basically, it’s home styling or organising after a declutter. Something I already do for my clients.
Here’s another gem:
“Unlike unintentional cluttering, re-cluttering is done purposefully to restore a sense of comfort, functionality, or aesthetic balance. It focuses on reintroducing meaningful items that enhance a space’s utility or emotional resonance.”
Translation: This is literally the entire point of decluttering in the first place! You keep only the things you love and use that make your home work for you and bring you joy.
Yet somehow, the media is clutching at straws to make it sound like a whole new concept. According to an article on The Spruce, “recluttering” is a 2025 buzzword that’s all about “celebrating meaningful belongings and rejecting minimalism.” Sound familiar? Yep. It’s what us pro organisers have been saying for years — only without the confusing new labels.
Why Overcomplicate Decluttering?
Here’s the thing: Decluttering doesn’t need fancy terms or fads. It’s simple, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. The real challenge?
Getting started when you’re already overwhelmed.
Sound familiar?
-
You’ve got kids’ toys spilling out of every cupboard.
-
The kitchen worktops are covered in stuff you don’t even recognise.
-
You feel like you need a full week off work to tackle it all — but who has the time?!
Clutter isn’t just physical; it’s emotional. It weighs on you. It causes stress, guilt, and a feeling of “I’m failing at life.” (You’re not, by the way — but I get why it feels that way.)
So, when you see trendy words like “re-cluttering” popping up in your newsfeed, it’s no wonder you feel confused or paralysed. But let me be clear: you don’t need a buzzword. You need a plan.
Why Decluttering Feels So Hard
Let’s be honest. Most of us aren’t drowning in clutter because we want to be. It’s a combination of:
-
Not enough time — You’re juggling work, kids, and life admin. Decluttering falls to the bottom of the list.
-
Not enough space — Your home feels like it’s bursting at the seams.
-
Not enough motivation — When you’re already knackered, the last thing you want to do is start a decluttering project.
Add in the emotional attachment we have to our stuff, and it’s no wonder people feel stuck. But here’s the good news:
You don’t need a perfect system or hours of free time to make progress.
You just need a plan that’s easy to follow, realistic for your busy life, and motivating enough to keep you going. That’s exactly why I created my 2025 Decluttering Success Bundle.
